Family Video Today
We are the largest movie and game rental chain in the United States. We operate over 500 Family Video stores in 20 U.S. states and Canada. Our unique property-ownership model makes us a different sort of retailer because we buy and develop most of our buildings and land. We have developed more than 600 retail strip centers and count Fortune 500 companies as well as Mom and Pop retailers among our tenants.
Our entrepreneurial spirit is what keeps Family Video strong. Recent efforts include opening Marco's Pizza restaurants adjacent to our brick and mortar stores to offer one-stop shopping for dinner and entertainment, sister companies such as Highland Pure Water and Ice, a self-service kiosk providing purified water and ice, and StayFit-24, state-of-the-art fitness centers that offer workouts in a clean and safe environment. We have also added animal clinics to our growing portfolio with our Family Vet Group brand.
We are a company made of talented and dedicated people who take pride in a job well done – and like to have fun doing it. Our days are built around four daily goals; to learn, to teach, to WOW and to improve. More than 7,000 people make our team strong and successful as we serve our customers and build this exciting company.
As our company grows, there is unlimited potential for talented people. Building more stores and developing new brands means making additional opportunities for part-time and full-time employees, as well as assistant managers. After successfully completing a comprehensive training program, Store Managers are offered opportunities to grow with our company and relocate, District Managers are needed to oversee multiple stores and Regional Managers are promoted to build our company in new markets.
How We Started
In 1946, Clarence Hoogland started Midstates Appliance & Supply Company. In 1953, Clarence’s son, Charlie Hoogland, took over the company. In the 1970s, Midstates got “stuck” with a large quantity of videos. Charlie’s team got the idea to rent the videos, and in 1978 Family Video was founded. Midstates became a distributor for Magnetic Video, the first supplier of videocassettes for Hollywood studios in 1977. However, few people were willing to pay the asking price for home versions of popular movies. With an inventory surplus, Charlie Hoogland saw an opportunity to rent his accumulation of unsold video tapes. The first Video Movie Club of Springfield opened in 1978. Additional stores opened in other cities - later rebranded as Family Video. Charlie Hoogland realized the best use of video rental revenue was to invest in commercial real estate on which future stores would be constructed. Charlie’s son, Keith Hoogland, assumed presidency of Family Video in 1995. Keith guided the company’s development into one of the largest video retailers in the U.S. and the largest privately-owned video chain in the world. Never content to rest on past accomplishments, over 9,000 employees contribute to the present and future of Highland Ventures. Our committment to both existing and emerging businesses is equaled by our commitment to the people who account for our diverse corporate structure and consistant core values. Our primary business always revolves around the creation of new opportunities for the right individuals. Though the dynamic of change is a constant, our people-first approach never changes.
Most Family Video stores are open weekdays 12pm until 8pm, with extended weekend hours, though hours may vary by location. Please call your local store to confirm.
