Silent film reigns again with 'The Artist'

Before this year, many people assumed silent films were a thing of the past, but "The Artist" changed everything. After capturing the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, the unique film may make movie buffs think twice about writing off silent productions. The acclaimed new release DVD hits shelves June 26. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is one of the biggest silent film stars in the world, but as the advent of talking pictures inches ever closer, there is no room for him. Dismissive of the trend of movies with sound, Valentin decides to finances a silent film himself that opens the same day as a rival movie with sound starring popular actress Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo). His movie flops and he finds himself out of money. Despondent and broke, Valentin eventually suffers extensive injuries in a fire, but after being rescued by a dog finds himself living with Peppy, who offers him a role in her upcoming film. Can Valentin adapt before it's too late? "The Artist" continues a streak of impressive Best Picture winners including "The Hurt Locker" and last year's winner "The King's Speech."
