A week after besting the Ridley Scott thriller "Prometheus" at the box office, the family movie "Madagascar 3" once again beat some stiff competition. The third installment of the animated series brought in $35.5 million, more than the highly anticipated "Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy," combined, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The result was certainly disappointing for "Rock of Ages," which landed in third place at $15.1 million, slightly behind "Prometheus." The star-studded adaptation of the popular stage musical featured performances from Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand and Bryan Cranston. Some had predicted it was going to do especially well at the box office.

As for "That's My Boy," the comedy movie's $13 million opening is bad news for its star Adam Sandler, the publication reports. The "Saturday Night Live" alum had long been a large box office draw, but with his recent performances that may no longer be the case.

"Madagascar 3," with voices from Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer and Chris Rock, has seemingly resonated with fans since the first "Madagascar" debuted in 2005. Fans may want to check out similar family movies including "Ice Age."
