Print this article Of all the characters in gangster movies, few are quite as famous as "Goodfellas" antagonist Henry Hill. Based on a real person, Hill was famously portrayed by Ray Liotta, and on Tuesday the real-life Henry Hill passed away at 69, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Hill was part of New York's Lucchese crime family and entered into the witness protection program in the 1980s after serving as a prosecution witness in a trial that ultimately led to the convictions of 50 people.
While some might think his portrayal in the 1990 Scorsese film was an exaggeration, he says that was not the case. He told the St. Petersburg Times last year that the film was as close to 100 percent accurate as a person can get. It is also one of the most popular movies of all time, earning six Academy Award nominations.
"Goodfellas" is in the pantheon of all-time great gangster movies. To check out some of the other best films of the genre, fans can watch "The Godfather" and "The Departed."
