Leave it to Will Smith to knock off one of the biggest movies of all time. In yet another big opening for Smith, "Men in Black III" captured the box office crown from "The Avengers" Memorial Day weekend, bringing in $55 million to knock the superhero movie from the top spot, according to the Los Angeles Times.

This weekend was the first in four weeks where "The Avengers" was not tops at the box office, as it finished with $46.9 million. To date, the hit movie has brought in a whopping $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the fourth biggest release of all time. While some say the $55 million for "Men in Black III" was below expectations, others are not so quick to judge.

"I wouldn't think that anybody could feel that the kind of business the picture did is not an excellent start," Rory Bruer, Sony's distribution president, told the Times. "Despite the budget, we're definitely going to come out of this in a very positive way."

Will Smith is no stranger to box office success. The "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" actor starred in some of the biggest-grossing movies of the last decade including "I, Robot" and "I Am Legend."
