Many have questioned the wisdom behind remaking the 1987 cult classic "RoboCop," but recent casting news might help quell their worry. Gary Oldman has been tapped to star in the remake alongside "The Killing" star Joel Kinnaman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kinnaman is set to star as the titular robotic police officer, who was played by Peter Weller in the original. As for Oldman, he's going to play Norton, the scientist who created the bionic crime fighter. Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha is set to direct the project, the publication reports. The film is set to start shooting in September and will hit theaters next summer.

Oldman is no stranger to being involved with big name franchises. He has had an integral role in Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy, and is in this summer's "The Dark Knight Rises." He also portrayed Sirius Black in four "Harry Potter" movies. Most recently, he earned his long-awaited first Academy Award nomination for "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy."

To get ready for the remake, moviegoers may want to watch the original, as well as similar films including "Starship Troopers" and "Total Recall.'
