Print this article Given its record-shattering opening weekend, many believed a sequel to "The Avengers" was inevitable, and they were right. Disney recently green-lit a second film in the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and if the first film is any indication, it is sure to be a hit.
The announcement came from the studio's CEO Bob Iger, who revealed plans for a second movie during a conference call with reporters. Though he gave no timeline for the project, it will be one of many superhero movie sequels hitting theaters in the coming years, with "Iron Man 3," "Thor 2" and a follow-up to "Captain America: The First Avenger" all on the way.
It certainly make sense to get the wheels in motion for an "Avengers" sequel, Iger says. Especially since it "shattered domestic box office records with a $207.1 million opening weekend for a global performance of more than $702 million to date," he told reporters.
Superhero sequels have been some of the most popular movies in recent years. "Spider-Man 3" and 2008's "The Dark Knight" both enjoyed some of the biggest opening weekends of all time.
