(We do not collect these names or emails!)Many analysts had predicted a huge opening weekend for "The Avengers," but the star-studded superhero movie may have surpassed even the loftiest expectations. The film took in around $200 million, breaking the record previously held by the last "Harry Potter" film for the largest opening weekend, MTV.com reports.
The movie, which features a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr. and Jeremy Renner, also ran past the year's highest grossing film, March's "The Hunger Games," which opened with $152.5 million.
Most forecasters say it should surpass the entire run of other popular superhero movies. In just one weekend, it has already bested "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Thor," which hit theaters last year. According to MTV, it should pass "Iron Man" and "Iron Man 2" with a successful second weekend.
Even though "The Avengers" has set the bar especially high, it may be topped by the time the summer rolls around. "The Dark Knight Rises," the third installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise, opens July 20. "The Dark Knight" managed to take in around $169 million its opening weekend in 2008.
