'The Avengers' sees huge opening weekend overseas

(We do not collect these names or emails!)The much-anticipated superhero movie "The Avengers" has yet to open in the United States, but it is already shattering box office records. The Marvel Studios film brought in more than $178 million in foreign markets, according to Hollywood.com.
The star-studded film, which features Robert Downey, Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Evans, opened at number one in every box office it debuted at this weekend. It was the most successful in the United Kingdom, where it brought in $24.7 million. It was also especially popular in Mexico, Australia and France.
“We’re extremely encouraged by this incredible start,” Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice president of theatrical exhibition, told Entertainment Weekly.
He certainly should be. For comparison, the year's other big hit, "The Hunger Games," was projected to make around $75 million and $100 million its first weekend in the states. "The Avengers" is expected to bring in anywhere from $125 million to $150 million when it hits theaters May 4.
To get in the mood for "The Avengers" fans may want to check out some other great superhero movies including "Iron Man" and "Captain America: The First Avenger."
