After news broke that Gary Ross, the director of "The Hunger Games," would not be returning for the sequel "Catching Fire," the rumors began to fly about who would replace him. The wait is apparently over, as Lionsgate has settled on Francis Lawrence to helm the anticipated second film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Although they have not officially made the announcement, sources told the publication that the studio reached out to the director late on Thursday afternoon. That means Lawrence beat out a number of other big names including Bennett Miller, who directed the Oscar nominated "Moneyball."

Lawrence may be a good fit for the project, however. He already has experience directing a dystopian hit movie. He was behind the popular movie "I Am Legend," which starred Will Smith as one of the few survivors of a worldwide epidemic. Lawrence has some other impressive credits to his name including "Water for Elephants" and "Constantine."

Shooting for "Catching Fire" is expected to begin sometime this summer or fall, with a release set for November 22, 2013.
