The best summer movies of the last decade

This summer is full of eagerly awaited films, but the most anticipated is something viewers might not expect, as "The Avengers" topped a list released by Fandango. Around 31 percent of men and 16 percent of women cited as their most anticipated summer movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. With the results of the survey in mind, movie fans may want to take a look back at some of the biggest summer movies of the last decade. 1. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" Audiences were skeptical heading in given the movie was based on a theme park ride, but they were quickly swayed. Released on July 9, 2003, the film grossed more than $650 million and earned Johnny Depp an Oscar nomination. 2. "Transformers" The first of the Michael Bay trilogy hit theaters July 4, 2007, and took audiences by surprise. Though the ensuing sequels were less well-reviewed, the first one was a critical success and brought in more than $709 million. 3. "The Dark Knight" You can't discuss summer movies without including the popular 2007 sequel to "Batman Begins." Paced by an Oscar-winning performance from Heath Ledger and non-stop action, the film remains one of the best superhero movies of all time.
