'Game of Thrones' renewed for a third season

The much-anticipated second season of "Game of Thrones" may have just kicked off, but the hit HBO series has already got picked up for a third. The Emmy-winning show, which is based on A Song of Ice and Fire series of books by George R.R. Martin, has been a hit with a large swatch of audiences, Access Hollywood reports. "Game of Thrones" debuted on HBO last April and was somewhat of a surprise hit. Though it had limited star power and a somewhat niche appeal given its fantasy and historical elements, fans flocked to the series and it made its first season one of the most popular on the network. So it's no surprise a third season was in order. "Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season - and then surpassed them," HBO President of Programming Michael Lombardo said in a release. "We are thrilled by all the viewer and media support we’ve received for the series, and can’t wait to see what Dan and David have in store for next season." The series has made a star out of Peter Dinklage, who won an Emmy for his role on the show. Fans who are interested in checking out other popular HBO series may want to watch "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Wire."
