James Spader will not return to 'The Office'

The ninth season of the hit NBC series "The Office" is still up in the air, but one thing is for sure - James Spader will not be returning. The former "Boston Legal" star has regularly appeared in season eight but will not be reprising his role as Robert California once it ends, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The announcement should not come as much of a surprise. In fact, Spader was not originally intended to be included in the show past a guest spot in the season seven finale. However, producer Paul Lieberstein says that it became apparent his character had to stick around longer. "He’s been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I’m grateful for that," he told the publication. The news throws the future of "The Office" into doubt. Longtime star and writer Mindy Kaling may not be returning if one of her show's is picked up, and there have been rumors about a spin-off series focusing on Rainn Wilson's Dwight Schrute. Regardless of whether or not "The Office" returns for a ninth seasons, fans can check out the best episodes through TV on DVD, as well as watch similar series such as "Parks and Recreation."
