'The Artist' wins big at BAFTAs

As the Oscars draw closer, more attention is being paid to each awards show in the coming weeks. This weekend it was the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), and once again it was "The Artist" that took home the top honors, according to The Associated Press. The French film, which has been cleaning up at just about every show, won seven awards, including best picture and best actor for star Jean Dujardin. It also took home honors for directing and original screenplay. The BAFTAs are often considered the British equivalent of the Oscars - so it is certainly a good sign for its Academy Award chances. "It's a simple story," Dujardin told reporters after the ceremony, according to the AP. "It's a love story. It's universal. And there's a cute dog" Of course, it remains to be seen how "The Artist" stacks up against the Oscar nominees, and it certainly faces some stiff competition.
