Naomi Watts cast as Princess Diana

Naomi Watts earned an Oscar nomination for her gripping performance in "21 Grams," but the actress may have another one on the way with the announcement of her next role. Watts has been cast as Princess Diana in the movie "Caught in Flight," Entertainment Weekly reports. The anticipated biopic is expected to begin filming later this year, and will continue an impressive string of movies for the British-Australian actress. Watts was most recently in the Clint Eastwood-directed "J. Edgar" and starred in the Woody Allen movie "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" in 2010. Despite her lengthy filmography, the role has a special meaning for Watts. "It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role - Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen," she said in a statement obtained by EW. Early rumors had Jessica Chastain as in the lead for the part, but Watts appeared to pull away over recent months.
