Print this article Few writers have been more revered than Hunter S. Thompson, and nobody has quite matched his unique style and penchant for pushing buttons. He has been immortalized on screen several times, most recently by Johnny Depp in "The Rum Diary," which comes to DVD on January 14.
The story follows Paul Kemp (Depp), who is a fictionalized version of Thompson, as he begins work as a reporter for The San Juan Star in Puerto Rico. Though a talented writer, Kemp spends much of his time in a rum-induced haze and gets into considerable trouble with perpetually inebriated coworker Sala (Michael Rispoli).
Eventually, however, Kemp stumbles across a great story. He has befriended Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart), an American who has greedy investment plans for Puerto Rico. Kemp hopes to expose his plans, but doing so proves to be more difficult than he envisioned.
This is not the first movie Depp has portrayed a Thompson-inspired. He also starred in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," and his performance even earned praise from Thompson himself, and the two eventually became friends.
