'Contagion' is a thriller with an unseen villain

When movie audiences think of thrillers they're likely expecting a sinister villain or a supernatural threat, but the antagonist in the hit 2011 movie "Contagion" is neither of those. The ensemble cast struggles to find a cure for a fast-growing pandemic that is claiming much of the world's population. The frightening new release DVD hits shelves January 3. The film follows a number of different people coping with the outbreak of the disease. Among them is Beth (Gwenthy Paltrow) who comes down with what at first appears to be a cold, but soon grows much worse. After Beth and her son Clark die, her husband Mitch (Matt Damon) copes with the loss while navigating the panic. As the disease spreads, government officials, including Dr. Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) hurry to find a cause and a cure. Others, including Dr. Leonora Orantes (Marion Cotillard) embark on a journey to find patient zero.  It's not often that Hollywood sees a medical thriller, but this year saw a similar film in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Anybody looking for another movie in the genre may want to check out "The Andromeda Strain."
