Though it's just four episodes into its first season, the FX series "American Horror Story" has been picked up for a second season. The first season comes to a close on December 21 and is among the channel's highest-rated shows, Deadline reports.

The announcement may not come as a surprise to those who have looked at the show's numbers. It's most recent episode garnered 3.1 million viewers between 18 and 49 and is on pace to become the highest rated first season for an FX show.

The show's creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, are no strangers to success. The duo served as the executive producers on the hit series "Nip/Tuck" and are also the co-creators of the Fox musical series "Glee."

“It’s one thing to have the ambition and guts to reinvent a genre in a way that makes it captivatingly fresh for a broad audience - it’s something else entirely to have the craft to back that ambition up," FX president John Landgraf told the website.

Anybody who has watched and enjoyed "American Horror Story" will want to check out similar series including "True Blood" and "The X-Files."
