Kevin Smith may be best known as the director of comedy movies but he recently went in a completely different direction with the 2011 horror movie "Red State." The star-studded new release DVD hits shelves October 18.

Teenagers Travis (Michael Angarano), Billy Ray (Nicholas Braun) and Jared (Kyle Gallner) head over to a trailer for an illicit meetup with a woman (Melissa Leo). However, once they get there they are drugged and captured by members of the Five Points Church.

After witnessing the murder of a captured gay resident, Jared, Billy Ray and Travis try desperately to escape from the clutches of the church's leader Abin Cooper (Michael Parks). However, it becomes increasingly apparent that the Five Points Church has much bigger issues than homophobia and the town may have a bigger problem on its hands.

Like many films, "Red State" highlights the potential horrors of fundamentalist religious groups. Some of the best such movies are the 1984 classic "Children of the Corn" as well as the haunting '70s film "The Wicker Man."
