If there was any question whether or not movie audiences still had a soft spot for "The Lion King" after 17 years, this weekend answered with a resounding yes. The updated 3D version of the film topped the box office with 29.3 million, more than the other three films that opened this weekend made combined, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Perhaps most interesting about the success of the re-release was the wide variety of viewers it attracted. According to the publication, 59 percent of audience members were under 25, perhaps suggesting that many people who grew up with the movie were drawn to its new 3D features. Additionally, 74 percent of audiences were families.

It's certainly not surprising that viewers would turn up for droves for the movie, which made almost $313 million when it was released in 1994, setting the record for an animated film at the time.

Fans of the Disney classic will certainly want to check out equally popular animated movies including "Wall-E" and "Toy Story 3," which earned a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.
