Print this article Depending on the the times, some movies hit home harder than others. Such is the case with "The Company Men," a star-studded film which addresses the hardships many families faced in the wake of the economic collapse in 2008. The new release DVD comes to stores June 7.
The film follows the life of Bobby Walker (Ben Affleck), a successful businessman who seemingly has it all. However, his life is quickly thrown into turmoil when the company he works for realizes it has to cut jobs to save money. Bobby, along with coworkers Phil (Chris Cooper) and Gene (Tommy Lee Jones), are all out of jobs. The pieces of his once perfect life, from his house to his six-figure salary, are all gone.
To make ends meet, Bobby starts working as a dry wall installer for his blue-collar brother in law Jack (Kevin Costner). The others face different paths as well, as Phil struggles to cope with being laid off after climbing the corporate ladder and Gene lives comfortably by relying on an impressive stock portfolio.
A number of movies have addressed hardships facing workers across the country, including the Academy Award-nominated "Up in the Air" and the intense documentary "Inside Job."
