Fresh off the commercial success of "The Hangover: Part II," Bradley Cooper is taking things in a much different direction. Variety reports that Cooper has signed on to the gritty crime-drama "The Place Beyond the Pines," which stars Ryan Gosling in the lead role.

The move may signal a shift for Cooper, who has been cast largely in comedy movies throughout his career. The 36-year-old actor has made waves for his roles in "Wedding Crashers," "Wet Hot American Summer" and "All About Steve." However, he earned critical acclaim for his turn opposite Robert DeNiro earlier this year in the thriller "Limitless."

According to the news source, Cooper will play a rookie cop in the upcoming film, who will be chasing down the crime spree caused by Gosling's character, a motorcycle rider who has to rob banks to support his family.

Film lovers looking to check out other gangster movies may want to indulge in a screening of "Dog Day Afternoon" or the Christian Bale and Johnny Depp hit "Public Enemies."
