Print this article One of the most popular dramas on television will be without one of its biggest stars next year. Chris Meloni will not be returning to "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" when it returns for its 13th season this fall, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The move comes somewhat as a surprise, as NBC executives had said that contract negotiations with the star were almost completed. However, that apparently was not the case as Meloni will exit, despite starring alongside Mariska Hargitay since the show's debut in 1999.
The news source reports that Hargitay will likely see a diminished role as well, given that she recently adopted a child with her husband. Rumors have been swirling about Jennifer Love Hewitt replacing Hargitay as the female lead, but nobody has come forward as the frontrunner to fill Meloni's shoes.
The drama has long been one of the highest rated shows on NBC. Fans of the series looking to enjoy some similar TV on DVD may want to check out "House" or "Boston Legal."
