Though he is most well-known for playing charismatic funnymen (with a slight hint of arrogance), Bradley Cooper is now headed in a much different direction. The "Wedding Crashers" actor is in talks to play Lucifer in an upcoming adaptation of John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost," Variety reports.

The project is led by Alex Proyas, who has directed a number of dark science fiction films including "I, Robot" and "The Crow." Though an official offer has not been made, producers are hoping that inclusion of Cooper will breathe new life into the film, which had lacked enthusiasm in recent attempts to get it made.

According to the news source, the movie is expected to be a more action-packed take on the Milton classic, which tells the story of the Devil's fall from grace. The film may also be shot in 3D when production begins in the near future.

Action movies with religious undertones have fared well in recent years. The Keanu Reeves-led vehicles "Constantine" and "The Matrix" were both wildly popular.
