Print this article As an album, American Idiot made waves when it was released by Green Day nearly seven years ago, and when it debuted as a Broadway show in 2010 it was a hit as well. It appears as though popular rock-opera is headed to the big screen - with a backing by Tom Hanks. Reuters reports that the "Apollo 13" star is expected to serve as a producer.
The project is still in its earliest stages, and Universal is in process of obtaining the rights to the music and the story, but rumors are also swirling that Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar for "Milk," will write the screenplay. In addition to Hanks, the members of Green Day will also lend their name to the production.
It's not the first time that Hanks has been involved in a musical production. According to the news source, he and his businesses partner were behind "Mamma Mia," the stage show based on ABBA's songs, which later became a popular movie as well.
