It appears as though the much anticipated release of the Nintendo 3DS lived up to the hype. Officials from the company say that the first-day sales were the highest of any handheld device in Nintendo history, but they are not releasing any specific details until April 14.

There was some speculation as to whether or not the $250 price tag, which some considered a hefty sum for the handheld device, would deter consumers from purchasing the groundbreaking product. It doesn't look like that was the case. According to CNN.com, analysts believe the 3DS could sell around 4 million units its first month.

"We've never actually stopped looking at 3-D as a viable product," developer Hideki Konno told the news source. "And it just so happens that the technology in the marketplace now coincides with what we wanted to do. So actually, it was just very fortuitous timing."

There are still a number of popular Nintendo DS video games available for those who are not ready to take the 3D plunge. Titles such as "Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs" and "Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks" are classic games franchises adapted to the DS.
