Most moviegoers can agree that Sam Worthington has emerged as one of the most popular actors in Hollywood at the moment. Now, the star of several action movies such as "Avatar" will hit the open water as he is slated to appear in the upcoming surfing film "Drift." The movie is set in southwest Australia and will start filming later this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story, which takes place in 1972, features Worthington as one of a group of brothers as they battle the elements and ruthless bikers while trying to get their surfing business off the ground. The flick is expected to be directed by Ben Nott and Morgan O'Neill, who also wrote the script.

"Sam Worthington, one of the world's highest profile actors at the moment, is on board and the storyline showcases the region's stunning coastline, so we expect the publicity for the project will be strong both locally and internationally," West Australian regional development minister Brendon Grylls told the news source.

Worthingon burst on to the scene as the star of some of 2009's biggest action movies including "Star Trek" and "Terminator: Salvation."
