Most suspenseful movies feature a maniacal villain, supernatural entity or act of God as the adversary of the main characters. Such is not the case in "Unstoppable," a film which pits a pair of unlikely heroes against a runaway train caused by human error.

The film, which was inspired by true events, focuses on veteran engineer Frank Barnes (Denzel Washington), who is being forced into early retirement. On one of his last days on the job he is paired with the newly hired Will Colson (Chris Pine), a conductor with whom he immediately butts heads.

However, a mistake made by rail yard attendant Dewey (Ethan Suplee) sends an unmanned train hurdling through Pennsylvania at speeds upward of 70 miles per hour. It's up to Barnes, Colson and yardmaster Connie Hooper (Rosario Dawson) to devise a way to bring the locomotive to a stop and prevent a catastrophic accident.

Washington continues his knack for driving films forward, and his performance is one of his best in years. Still, moviegoers might get a kick out of watching him light up the screen in "American Gangster" and "Training Day."
