Print this article Every once in a while a documentary has the ability to pull at the heartstrings. Such is the case for "Waiting for Superman," a film that gets to the root of the country's school system and chronicles a handful of dedicated parents' struggles to do right by their children.
The film follows a variety of educators, students and parents, and brings to light the plight of the American education system. The film also highlights the mission of a group of charter schools and focuses on the overwhelming number of kids who, due to such high demand, are unfortunately turned away from their doors.
"Waiting for Superman," which was directed by Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth"), won the Sundance Audience Award for Best Documentary in 2010.
Although scores of moviegoers were surprised to see that "Waiting for Superman" didn't earn an Oscar nomination, audiences should remember that the film had some fairly stiff competition. "Exit Through the Gift Shop" and "Inside Job" are supposedly the ones to beat February 27.
