Those who have yet to hear the name Katniss Everdeen may want to quickly catch up on "The Hunger Games." The first chapter of young adult trilogy, penned by Suzanne Collins, is currently being adapted into a feature-length film.

Collins recently spoke about the movie, which is slated to be released in 2012.

"Obviously, you have to let things go," she told Entertainment Weekly, "but it's more than a question of condensation. You want to preserve the essence while making the film stand on its own. It's an art in itself."

At the moment, fan speculation about who will play the lead heroine, Katniss, is running rampant. Names such as Emma Watson and British "Skins" actress Kaya Scodelario have all been mentioned as possibilities.

Luckily, Collins will have more of a say than most authors who see their words make it to the silver screen - as it turns out, she is penning the screenplay as well.

"The Hunger Games" is set to be helmed by Gary Ross, best known for directing the critically-acclaimed drama "Seabiscuit."
