It looks as though Mel Gibson's first booked acting gig since his most recent public scandal will never see the light of day. According to Entertainment Weekly, the actor and director has been fired from "The Hangover 2."

Gibson was cast in the highly-anticipated sequel to "The Hangover" as an outlandish character similar to Tom Cruise's role in "Tropic Thunder." However, the other actors appearing in the film, most notably Zach Galifianakis, made no efforts to hide their disappointment with that decision.

Todd Phillips, the writer and director of "The Hangover 2," released a statement to the press about nixing Gibson's performance.

"I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of [Warner Bros. President] Jeff Robinov and his team," Phillips said. "But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision did not ultimately have the full support of my entire cast and crew."

Phillips is also known for directing a number of esteemed comedies, including "Old School" and "Starsky & Hutch." His latest film, "Due Date," will be in theaters November 5.
