Benjamin Bratt is wonderful in "La Mission"

Benjamin Bratt stopped into Family Video recently to chat about his movie "La Mission," and his enthusiasm for the project was overwhelming. Bratt stars in the independent film which his brother, Peter Bratt, wrote and directed. Since its completion, the intense drama has made its way to various festivals across the country, including The San Francisco Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the prestigious Park City, Utah Sundance Film Festival. Set in the Mission district of San Francisco, "La Mission" tells the story of Che Rivera (Bratt), an ex-con who boasts a large number of tattoos as well as overwhelming amount self-confidence. He is feared by outsiders and yet respected by his macho inner circle. Che is struggling with alcoholism, and drives a bus in order to make ends meet. In his free time, he and his buddies restore old cars to mint condition. It's the way of life in this densely-populated Latino community, and Bratt nails Che's inner turmoil perfectly. Of course, the veteran actor's ability to handle such an emotionally-challenging role is hardly surprising. In fact, Bratt, who is best known for playing Detective Rey Curtis on "Law & Order," has been honored with several awards throughout his career, and was nominated for an Emmy in 1999. In "La Mission," it isn't long before Che is faced with a serious problem - his son, Jesse (Jeremy Ray Valdez), is gay. After tossing aside the person he loves most in the world, the tough Latino is forced to take stock of what's important in his life. "La Mission" has already garnered a number of incredible awards, including an Audience Award at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, as well as a Human Rights Award at the Artivist Film Festival. The film's message - to stop the use of violence in order to answer problems - speaks to people of all races and cultures. And while the characters in the film come from very specific backgrounds, the message is universal. "La Mission" will be available on DVD August 10.
