Forget "The Godfather" flicks. Never mind the "Lord of the Rings" saga. The greatest film trilogy to date may very well be one that follows a bunch of plastic and plush toys as they plot, scheme and wiggle their way into some of the biggest pickles a young child can possibly imagine.
That's not to say adults - or anyone with a heartbeat, for that matter - won't get a kick out of "Toy Story 3," the latest piece of perfection from Pixar Animation Studios. After 11 feature-length CGI films, you would think the folks behind these masterpieces would be running out of material. However, the recent adventures of Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the rest of the gang only prove that each time the whiz kids at the studio dust off their pens and pencils and put on their thinking caps, they're capable of giving us something spectacular.
"Toy Story 3" revolves around the loveable trinkets as the unthinkable is about to happen - Andy, their human handler, is about to head off to college. For the perpetual playthings, this is basically the kiss of death. Their best hope is heading to the attic, and the knickknacks sullenly begin to accept their fate.
In a neat plot twist, the gang is accidentally transported to Sunnyside Daycare, a place that seems akin to a toy's version of Arcadia. The place is filled with dozens of children and friendly faces, and is run by a seemingly gracious plush bear, Lotso (short for "Lots-o-Love," and voiced by Ned Beatty). Don't let the name fool you - there's more to this stuffed animal than meet the eye.
Just like the unforgettable films "Ratatouille" and "Finding Nemo," high jinks ensue. Well, of course they do. This is a kid's movie, and you're going to need a fair dose of silliness, kitschy humor, and adorable scenes for the younger bunch. Still, when the toys start to deal with issues such as abandonment and their own mortality, adults will be sucked in for the ride.
"Toy Story 3" is the culmination of the cherished franchise, and so far, it's Pixar's magnum opus. The vibrant-colored and neatly animated flick is so full of life and emotion that you almost forget you're rooting for a gaggle of inanimate objects to beat the bad guy, get the girl, and save the day.
"Toy Story 3" is 109 minutes and is rated G. It contains a few frightening scenes, sexual innuendo and fast-paced action. Recommended for children ages 2 and up.
