James McAvoy may have just landed the role of his life. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is set to play a young Professor X in the upcoming prequel to the franchise.

"X Men: First Class" will reportedly chronicle the beginnings of the saga. Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr, known as Professor X and Magneto, respectively, will be key players in the film.

The story is rumored to follow the pair as they discover their powers. "Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known," Fox Studios wrote in a press release.

McAvoy has been adored by audiences ever since he appeared in "The Last King of Scotland" alongside Forest Whitaker. More recently he starred in "Atonement" with Keira Knightley and "Wanted" with Angelina Jolie.

The actor will be lending his voice to the lead character in the animated film "Gnomeo and Juliet," which is due in theaters next year.ADNFCR-2673-ID-19809167-ADNFCR
