Ellen Page to star in "Freeheld"

Ellen Page endeared herself to audiences with her quirky comedic antics in "Juno," but it looks like the talented actress is looking to step into more serious roles. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Academy Award nominee is set to play the female lead in "Freeheld," which will be based on Cynthia Wade's Oscar-winning short documentary of the same name. Endgame Entertainment is currently developing the project. The film is based on the true story of Stacie Andree (Page), a New Jersey car mechanic. Andree's girlfriend, Laurel Hester, was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and the pair fought to secure her pension benefits. "As a documentarian and feature producer, you always look for powerful stories with subject matter that will resonate with audiences, and Cynthia's remarkable chronicle of the battle forged by two women did just that," Endgame Entertainment Founder and CEO James D. Stern, told the news outlet. Page most recently appeared in the action-packed roller derby drama "Whip It," which was directed by Drew Barrymore.
