"X-Men: First Class" has officially gotten a release date. The studio has announced that the prequel to the popular superhero films will hit theaters on June 3, 2011.

Matthew Vaughn, who just directed the action-comedy "Kick-Ass," is set to direct the highly-anticipated movie. Vaughn also helmed the fantasy "Stardust" and the Daniel Craig action movie"Layer Cake."

"I've been a fan of Matthew's since 'Layer Cake,'" Brian Singer, who directed the first two "X-Men" films, said in a statement. "He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-Men film."

There have been four chapters of the franchise so far, and each has been extremely profitable for Twentieth Century Fox. "X-Men: The Last Stand," took in over $450 million in ticket sales worldwide.

It looks like Vaughn is adept at turning a superhero script into a success at the box office, as "Kick-Ass" has grossed over $70 million worldwide so far.ADNFCR-2673-ID-19760800-ADNFCR
