One of the original monsters of cinema will be stomping its way back to the silver screen. It has been confirmed that a remake of "Godzilla" is in the works, and is projected to be released in theaters in 2012.

According to Variety, Legendary Pictures has announced that they will be producing the film. The studio also said they will be choosing a director shortly.

The character Godzilla has traditionally been depicted as a gigantic sea monster that resembles a lizard. In most of the Japanese films featuring the creature, which date back to 1954, Godzilla terrorizes the denizens of Tokyo.

There was also the American remake of the beloved movie released in 1998. That "Godzilla" starred Matthew Broderick as Dr Niko Tatopoulos and Jean Reno as Philippe Roaché.

Legendary Pictures will be co-producing "Godzilla" with Warner Brothers Pictures. It looks like the remake is in good hands - the two studios have collaborated in the past on "The Dark Knight" and "The Hangover."ADNFCR-2673-ID-19697981-ADNFCR
