Fans of the cartoon "Popeye" are in for a treat. The classic story of a sailor who morphs into a muscular hero after eating spinach will be made into a new, feature-length film.

According to Variety, Sony Pictures Animation has announced they will be producing the project based on the popular cartoon character. Enthusiasts of the film will be happy to learn that its being released in 3D.

Mike Jones, whose current script, "The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break," is in development at Gotham Group, has been hired to write the screenplay.

"I'm an unabashed, lifelong Popeye fan. Introducing this squinty-eyed sailor to a new generation also means reintroducing him to those who, like me, grew up with him," Jones told the news source.

Sony Pictures Animation may be a perfect studio to produce the film. They are currently behind the much-anticipated computer-generated movie "Smurfs," which will be in theaters next year.

The news source is also reporting that Popeye's love interest, Olive Oyl, arch-rival Bluto, as well as baby Swee'Pea will all be making appearances in the new production.ADNFCR-2673-ID-19685486-ADNFCR
