Print this article "Avatar," James Cameron's epic blockbuster, which grossed over $2 billion worldwide, will be released on DVD Thursday, April 22. The date may come as a surprise for some moviegoers, as DVDs usually hit store shelves on a Tuesday. However, the release of the film is meant to coincide with Earth Day.
According to MTV.com, the disc will not have any extras or bonus material and will not be in 3D, but instead will be filled with ample audio and video. The move is meant to give fans of Cameron's blue-skinned, wide-eyed creatures an optimal viewing experience.
The news source is also reporting that Cameron and producer Jon Landau will be planning an environmental campaign to coincide with the release, which they will give further details about at a March 23 press conference.
"Avatar" tells the story of Jake (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed Marine who travels to the planet Pandora. There he meets members of the Na'vi tribe, and falls for the strong-willed Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).
When the U.S. military infiltrates Na'vi territory, Jake must choose between his new loyalties and old alliances.
Cameron is now the director of the two highest grossing films of all time. His other epic, "Titanic," pulled in $1.8 million worldwide.
