Print this article "The Book of Eli" takes place in 2043, though life in the near future is very different for residents of earth.
In the film, Eli (Denzel Washington) must closely guard his copy of the Bible, which seems to be the only copy remaining in the desolate new world.
Because the other citizens of the God-forsaken landscape seem to believe that the book will provide the answer to all of their problems, Eli must fight to defend himself and his property against villains and the vigilante political structure of the new civilization.
Mila Kunis of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" also appears in the film as Solara, a young woman who Eli takes under his wing.
Carnegie (Gary Oldman), the tyrannical ruler of a ramshackle town, is intent on stealing the volume for himself to glean insight and power.
Washington has recently appeared in other films such as "American Gangster" and is slated to reprise his role as Detective Keith Frazier in an upcoming sequel to "Inside Man."
"The Book of Eli" will hit theaters January 15.
