Fans of unpredictable films will revel in the richly layered story of "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee." Robin Wright Penn stars as the title character, a beautiful woman with a complicated past.

Pippa Lee was doted on by her drug-addled mother (played by Maria Bello) but eventually sought refuge with her aunt. Pippa later marries Herb Lee (Alan Arkin), a much-older man who takes her to live in a retirement village.

Blake Lively, famous for her role as Park Avenue princess Serena van der Woodsen on the WB's "Gossip Girl," plays Pippa Lee as a young woman. Both actresses give depth and scope to the role, allowing the audience to empathize with the troubled character instead of judging her.

Penn is appearing in theaters now as the character of Belle in Disney's "A Christmas Carol," a 3-D animated adventure of the classic Christmas story. When he's visited by Christmas spirits, the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge learns to understand the true meaning of Christmas. Belle, a former flame of Scrooge's, appears in his vision of Christmas past.

"The Private Lives of Pippa Lee" was released in the U.S. on November 27.
