Print this article Movie buffs will know that Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal once competed for the role of Peter Parker in "Spider-Man." Maguire clearly won that battle, but the two are at odds again in the new film "Brothers," which is due out in December.
When soldier Sam Cahill (Maguire) is reported to be killed in the line of duty, his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and his two daughters must begin to put their lives back together. Sam's brother Tommy, played by Gyllenhaal, feels responsible for Grace and the girls, and begins to fill Sam's role as husband and father. But everything is not as it seems, and Grace is faced with several difficult decisions.
A movie that highlights the fall-out of war is not unknown territory for Gyllenhaal. The actor portrayed Anthony Swofford, a troubled marine in 2005's "Jarhead." The film, based on Swofford's 2003 memoir of the same name, is about the marine's experiences in the first Gulf War.
The actor also won rave reviews for his groundbreaking performance as Jack Twist opposite Heath Ledger in the provocative "Brokeback Mountain."
Fans of "Spider-Man" will be pleased to know that Maguire is slated to return as Peter Parker in the fourth installation of the popular franchise, which is due out in 2011.
