Fallen Earth: Welcome to the Apocalypse is a persistent world online RPG set in 1,000 square kilometers of real-world terrain located near the Grand Canyon. As its subtitle implies, Fallen Earth takes place after a series of cataclysmic events (including a deadly virus and nuclear war) leave less than one percent of Earth's 21st-century population alive. Players create an original character, but there are no set classes, so gamers can customize and level up their avatar in any way they see fit by performing tasks for six different factions. Each faction specializes in a different set of skills and abilities, and each mission performed for a faction increases a player's favorable view from that faction and its two allies, while simultaneously decreasing favor with the three opposing factions.
The gameplay resembles that of first-person shooters, with the damage dealt during combat determined by each character's specific attributes. Aside from doing battle with the warring factions of humanity, players must also deal with a variety of beasts and mutants roaming the irradiated landscape of the Grand Canyon Province. There are three primary weapon classes in Fallen Earth -- rifles, pistols, and melee weapons -- but a detailed crafting system lets players upgrade their skills and create new weapons, as well as new medicines and food items. An inventory and encumbrance system takes into account all the items, armor, and weapons a player is carrying, while a variety of vehicles help gamers travel and transport their cargo more efficiently. Gamers who purchase Fallen Earth can play for free for 30 days, after which point they will need to pay monthly (initially 14 dollars and 99 cents), quarterly, or yearly subscription fees.
