Lily Mars, a small town girl (Judy Garland) has a hankering for a real role in a major play, and won't give up until she gets her chance. She keeps after producer Thornway (Van Heflin) until he is too tired to argue, even following him to New York, and he finally gives her a shot. But her real chance comes when she fills in for the leading lady, and she debuts on Broadway.
