Jimmy Stewart plays the great American yet again as Chip Hardesty, a backwoods paper pusher for the Bureau of Investigation, the predecessor to the FBI. Under pressure from his wife, Lucy (Vera Miles), Hardesty decides to resign in order to pursue a more lucrative career as a lawyer. But when he travels to D.C., Hardesty meets the bureau's new boss, J. Edgar Hoover, and decides to stick with the organization. Over the next 30 years, Hardesty travels the country to face all the evils and villains of the United States, including the Ku Klux Klan, murderous oil barons, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Nazis, and communist spies. Throughout, Hardesty struggles between his commitment to his growing family and the life-threatening demands of his job. Choosing the street operator's perspective on the history of the FBI provides the film with numerous action sequences that are accompanied by a fine score from maestro Max Steiner.
