Description
Almost painfully intimate, the autobiographical documentary ADRIFT is an emotionally gripping account of one man's lifelong struggle to overcome the crippling legacy of his father's death. Boston-based director Tom Curran grew up in an Irish-American family dominated by an overly demanding, sports-fanatic father. When the elder Curran died, 12-year-old Tom was determined to fulfill his father's expectations by becoming a professional athlete. But Curran's failure to secure a career in sports--and subsequent turn to filmmaking--prompted feelings of guilt and inadequacy that led the 37-year-old on a cross-country odyssey to reexamine his troubled relationship with his father. Through dramatic footage of that trip, as well as Super 8 home movies and interviews with his bodybuilder sister Maeve and fisherman brothers Des and Gav, Curran gauges the impact of his father's perfectionist nature on his own psyche and, in the process, offers a universal exploration of grief, ambition, and loss.
