Story of a Prostitute Criterion Collection DVD Description
This 1965 Japanese feature was startling for its use of a female point of view. Set during WWII, it is the story of Harumi, one of a group of "comfort women" who spend time with soldiers during their leaves from battle. A commanding officer falls for Harumi and becomes the property of this sadistic militarist. Harumi, meanwhile, falls for a subordinate officer who is considerably more tender. The two lovers sneak away during which time the Chinese capture the base leaving Harumi and her soldier to pay serious dividends. Seijun Suzuki directs this brutal tale of passion based on an antiwar novel by Tajiro Tamura.
