Mary, a flighty, unemployed, 24-year-old Manhattanite (Parker Posey) gets thrown in jail for having a rent party and must call her godmother, a librarian, to bail her out. Her godmother complies, but makes Mary work off her bail at the library. Suddenly faced with a regular job AND trying to learn the Dewey Decimal System, Mary tries to get her life in order, finding time to romance a Lebanese falafel vendor and helping her roommate become a DJ along the way. Daisy Von Scherler Mayer's winning comedy captures the spirit of downtown Manhattan in the early 90's, and coaxes a vibrant, winning performance out of Posey.
